Demos (after Felix Gonzalez-Torres) Die-cut paper, endless copies
2009
Demos (after Felix Gonzalez-Torres) plays on the Gonzalez-Torres motifs of paper stacks as well as the circles of the clocks in Untitled (Perfect Lovers), 1991. The piece comprises of a stack of paper in which two holes have been punched out. Like with Gonzalez-Torres' paper stacks, the audience is invited to take a sheet with them. The titled ‘demos’ refers to the public within a democracy. I was interested in the idea of the stacks where a limited amount is available. I wanted to strike a tension where there is both a generosity, where a free part of work is offered, but, at the same time, an accountability to the participation as each time one is taken the amount is diminished. The work further offers a part (the sheet of paper) but also withholds a part (the centre holes).
