In 1997, I experienced my first Felix Gonzalez-Torres works at the Johannesburg Biennale of that year. The work had an immediate impact on me. When I began to produce art professionally, I found that my understanding of his work grew and his influence became stronger. Gonzalez-Torres taught me to see myself in relation to everything I made. As a result, I tried to make art that always considered myself (and my work) in relation to the public, the gallery and my partners in addition to coming from outside of the centre. His iconic work Untitled (Perfect Lovers), 1991, has become a reoccurring motif and reference point for my work and I often return to his mirroring and doubling as way to explore and articulate some of these questions. |
