Eight Hours and Lockout are based on a stained glass window in the Vooruit building in Ghent, Belgium. It depicts men and women pushing a wheel forward. I had discovered the window while I was filming for Underfoot (Vooruit). The image had stuck with me and felt very familiar. I later realised that the reason for this was that the imagery is the same as the logo for C.O.S.A.T.U. (Congress of South African Trade Unions). I spent some time researching the image but I am yet to discover the original source. It felt so iconic and familiar I am convinced it has more of a story than i have discovered, although I did eventually find it cropping up in couple other union logos from around the world. For the wall drawings, I simplified the image and for Eight Hours, I removed the wheel and flag from the composition, while Lockout reversed this with just the wheel and flag remaining.
