3 Point Turn (in Collaboration with Dorothee Kreutzfeldt) | Action | 2007 For the action, 3 Point Turn, Sam Matentji, a former minibus-taxi driver, was commissioned to do a 'stunt' performance in Twist Street in front of the Point Blank Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa. One of the city's main taxi ranks is situated opposite the gallery, resulting in ± 150 000 commuters passing daily and creating heavy traffic in the area. The car was decorated in a style that referenced both stunt cars and
minibus-taxis. Matentji christened the car 'Ihashi Lemohlophe', meaning
'White Horse' in isiXhosa. He proceeded to perform the task of completing
a 3 point turn on the one-way road and then drive back against the traffic.
The action was documented from the balcony of the gallery. |
